The path of the drug addict – whether they are in the thrall of an illegal ‘street drug’ or, as is increasingly the case these days, are struggling with an addiction to prescription medications, a solution to the problem, and the path to recovery, can often be found at a drug addiction treatment center. Choosing between all of the many offerings out there though can be difficult.
There are a great many considerations, facts and circumstances that will determine which treatment center is the best fit for you, or the loved one you are trying to assist. Glossy ads or celebrity clients should not be the factors that sway you. However, all of the following should be taken into account when choosing a drug addiction treatment center:
+ The actual length of program.
+ The program’s documented and provable success rate.
+ The treatment style, or styles, that are followed.
+ Whether it is an In-Patient or Out-Patient facility or a combination of both.
+ The training that the staff has undergone and how many work within the facility.
+ The costs
Study after study has shown that the length of a rehab program is often very closely linked to the patient’s overall chances of success in overcoming addiction in the long term. Longer treatments administered on an in-patient basis are almost always going to be the most expensive, but they are also often the programs that can boast the lowest relapse rates.
The length of a drug rehabilitation program that would best benefit an individual is also tied to the frequency and intensity of their drug abuse. For instance, a teen who has just begun ‘experimenting’ with ‘softer’ drugs like marijuana may best benefit from a shorter out-patient program that still allows them to maintain most of their ‘normal’ life, including their schooling.
In addition, the best programs will be those specifically geared towards adolescents who are probably dealing with issues that are very different to those of adults. On the other hand, an adult who has been entrenched in their addiction for years will often best benefit from a far more stringent in-patient program that is then supplemented with regular follow-up treatments and sessions on an out-patient basis.
Treatment style is another very important consideration, and this is where things can become difficult, as what works for one patient may not be effective for another. The usual wisdom is however that for those for whom their addiction goes beyond mere habit and has become a life threatening chemical dependency the most drastic measures are called for. These patients may best benefit from participating in a program that uses a medication, such as methadone, to stave off the very difficult physiological symptoms of withdrawal in order that he or she can participate effectively in other types of drug addiction treatment such as Cognitive behavioral therapy or a 12-step program.
If circumstances dictate that in-patient treatment is the best option you should then turn your attention to the size and experience of the staff at the rehabilitation center. A truly reputable program should employ fully licensed medical doctors, experienced registered nurses, fully licensed psychotherapists, clinical social workers and trained security personnel.
As to cost, in an ideal world, the cost of drug rehabilitation would not be a bar to saving an addicts life, but for many it is. Many health insurance companies will however cover some of the costs at least and payment plans and sliding scale fees may also be available.
Some drug rehabilitation centers and methods have become well known, but not always for the right reasons.
The following centers however have an excellent reputation for all of the right reasons:
Promises Treatment Center
Promises Treatment Center, which maintains clinics in LA and Malibu, California, is considered by many to be perhaps the best drug rehab choice in the US. They offer their patients extended in patient care that includes medical treatments, anger management, life coaching and art and equine therapies. Promises also uses what is referred to as the “Malibu Model,” which allows patients more freedom, allowing them to leave the facility for limited amounts of time rather than ‘imprisoning’ them (which is how many addicts see it).
The Betty Ford Center
Arguably the most famous drug and alcohol rehabilitation center of all, founded in1982 by the late U.S. first lady, offers a wide variety of treatment options that cover inpatient, outpatient and day treatment. Based in Rancho Mirage, California, the center operates 100 beds for long term patients as well as a detox program twinned with an intensive outpatient program. The center is more unusual in that it also offers a great many programs for children and family of alcoholics who can be as affected mentally by the habits of an addict as the addict themselves.
The Cirque Lodge
Sundance, Utah may be famous for its film festival but it also houses the two drug rehabilitation facilities known collectively as The Cirque Lodge. Patients are admitted to the 56 bed facility for a minimum of 30 days and are then treated based on the principles of a traditional 12 step program.
The Lodge is notoriously luxurious, a nod to its rather wealthy clientele (a single day costs $1,595) but clients are asked to surrender all of their expensive possessions, including cellphones and laptops and are only allowed limited visits from close family members.
Pasadena Recovery Center
The Pasadena Recovery Center has become very well known in the public mind as it is the center featured in the popular VH1 reality series “Celebrity Rehab,”. The clinic says, in its literature that it can provide “compassionate, comprehensive, and affordable treatment”, using a holistic approach that seeks to assist patients with mental, physical and spiritual issues relating to their addictions.
